Report suggests likely priority for Newcastle's new manager

Newcastle United's next manager will reportedly make ir a priority to keep a key midfielder at the club.

The Shields Gazette has reported that the first priority of Newcastle United’s next manager will be to rectify the future of midfielder Cheick Tiote.

The paper claims that Steve McClaren will be confirmed as Newcastle manager this week and will be looking to keep the aggressive midfielder tied down to St James’s Park for the foreseeable future.

Tiote won’t be pleased with the way last season panned out for him personally or for the team and he will be looking at his options with two-years left to run on his contract.

Newcastle are in a difficult position because if they can’t convince the midfielder to stay, they have to make the most of the two-years he’s got left to run on his current deal.

However, as the paper points out, the pair had a close relationship when they were both at FC Twente, before Tiote took a move to Newcastle.

They know each other, they know what they demand from each other and it’s vital that Newcastle have a strong core running through the heart of their team and Tiote certainly fits into that.
