Report: Ilkay Gundogan talks with Barcelona break down, could open Manchester United door

Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan is said to be demanding £170,000-a-week which is prohibitive for Barcelona, although Manchester United could still be interested.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is running down his current contract with a move from the Bundesliga looking likely since Bayern Munich dropped their interested, as per Bild.

Recent reports, as per Turkish news outlet DHA, suggest that Barcelona are now having difficulty negotiating with the player's father and agent, Irfan Gundogan. The Catalan club were reportedly shocked with the wage demands of £170,000-a-week.

It now appears there may be only one club left in the running for Gundogan with Metro claiming Manchester United are in prime position, but will United prove to be easier to negotiate with than Bayern Munich or Barcelona?

The Champions League winners were allegedly ready to offer £110,000-a-week, which they expected to lead to an agreement. What confuses a lot of people with Barcelona's transfer ban is that the club can still conduct incoming business. Registering a new player, however, is forbidden until the ban is lifted in 2016.

So, if Barcelona were able to agree a deal with Gundogan and his agent, the midfielder could go back on loan to his present club until January which is something Die Schwarzgelben would not turn down.

German legend Karl-Heinz Reidle insists the Camp Nou is the right destination for Gundogan.

"First of all, it is a pity that he is leaving Dortmund," Reidle told Goal.

"But if he choses to go to Barcelona, I will congratulate him.

"Barcelona suits his style of play. If he is 100 percent fit, he is a sensational player. Rarely have I witnessed a player with the intelligence and ability which Gundogan possesses.

"I'm sure he can be a success at Barca. For me he is like a 'modern Xavi' in that is able to regulate and dictate the rhythm of the game.

"In this area, he is one of the the best in the world."
