HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Reading are struggling to agree a deal to sign Nottingham Forest striker Jamie Mackie on a permanent basis.
Mackie spent all of last season on loan at Reading after being shipped out by Forest as they looked to trim their squad.
The 29-year-old enjoyed a successful spell at Reading, helping the club reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Mackie scored six goals in 39 appearances for the Royals and the club had indicated they would like to keep the former Queens Park Rangers man on a permanent basis.
However, they have so far been unable to agree a deal with Forest and the news has alerted several other Championship clubs.
It means Mackie is set to begin pre-season with Forest and if he is unable to work his way into Dougie Freedman's plans he could find himself in limbo at the City Ground.
Mackie, who joined Forest in 2013 from Queens Park Rangers, is entering the final year of his contract at Forest and they are thought to be willing to listen to offers for the Scotland international.
