Clement said: “Alex Pearce is an experienced central defender and we’re very pleased to have him signed. He is strong, physical and an international footballer as well so he has lot of good qualities.”
The 26-year-old is a highly-rated defender in the Championship, and after progressing through Reading’s academy, captained the Royals for a number of years.
He has top flight experience to his name, as well as the knowledge of winning promotion, and securing his signing on a free transfer is a real statement of intent from Derby and new head coach Clement.
The Rams were linked with making a move for Pearce prior to Clement’s appointment at the iPro, but he seems pleased to have signed someone of his pedigree.
The experience of winning promotion from the second tier is something that often goes under-appreciated, but if the Rams had someone of Pearce’s quality last season, it is hard to imagine then suffering the same late-season collapse as they did.
Clement has highlighted this experience as being a key quality, whilst also indicating his physical strengths as something which stands out in the second tier.
With Clement being appointed head coach for the first-time in his career, he faces a real challenge to impress. However, the signing of Pearce as his first summer transfer bodes well for future success, and he is sure to impress at the heart of the Derby defence next season.
