Argentine star Nicolas Gaitan, who operates as a winger or an attacking midfielder, has remained one of those players to continually linked with a move to Manchester United. Indeed, the 27-year-old has reportedly close to a move for some five years now, without any deal eventually going through.
The same could be said for Angel Di Maria, before he eventually made his blockbuster move to Old Trafford, much to the surprise and dismay of Real Madrid fans, after likewise being a target for the Red Devils for a number of years.
As recently as the last few days, per The Star and numerous other English media outlets, there have been reports suggesting that at last, Manchester United will conclude a deal with Benfica and secure the services of Gaitan. However, all is not as cut and dried as those reports might suggest.
Along with speculation a possible departure for Angel Di Maria, could potentially hold the key to any deal being concluded for his fellow countryman, there have also been rumours that Liverpool and Chelsea are monitoring the situation of Gaitan.
Meanwhile and according to Spanish outlet Super Deporte, the apparent hesitance from Manchester United to make their move, has now lead to Portuguese super-agent, Jorge Mendes, offering his client to Valencia instead.
Mendes has his fingers in many pies, not least Valencia, where he has become a close confidante of their wealthy owner, Peter Lim, consulting not only during the takeover process, but providing ongoing advice when it comes to transfer business.
Whilst heading the negotiations which seemed set to take Gaitan to Manchester United, Mendes has reportedly been made conscious that he will receive a significant bonus from Benfica, if he can tie up a deal swiftly, with the Portuguese club keen to raise funds.
This could be seen as a clever tactic to put pressure on Manchester United, by Mendes, but it could also be the real deal. Especially given Valencia are in the midst of building a powerful dynasty, firmly intent on challenging the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid for La Liga, whilst also pushing for success in the Champions League.
Di Maria has signalled his intention to stay at Manchester United, who also seem reluctant to let him go after just one season, which could also indicate that they won't proceed with a planned move for Gaitan, given the abundance of players available in the roles he can operate.
As such and at the prospect of a move to the Mestalla instead, Super Deporte quote comments from those close to Gaitan, who indicated: "The possibility of moving to a club like Valencia, will never die."
Right now, it seems any chance of Gaitan moving to Old Trafford is eroding, whilst Mendes attempts to engineer a more guaranteed option for his client, with Valencia a more than suitable alternative, who aren't likely to be as hesitant in making their move.
