Glenn Hoddle: Mauricio Pochettino should have final say on Tottenham Hotspur transfers

Glenn Hoddle says that Mauricio Pochettino should have control of Tottenham Hotspur transfers.

Glenn Hoddle has written on that head coach Mauricio Pochettino should have the final say on transfer dealings at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Spurs legend believes that the North London outfit need to keep hold of their best players and allow Pochettino to make the signings that he wants.

“In the past they've sold Bale, Modric and Berbatov, but for Tottenham to be a successful club, and be the club it was of yesteryear, they need to start buying and adding to the squad because the nucleus of a good side is there,” Hoddle wrote on

“And they must allow Pochettino to buy the players he wants to because then they can be moulded to play the style of football he wants.

“Yes you can work hand in glove with the football director but the main core of the squad needs to be based on the manager’s views and not those of the Director of Football.”

Hoddle’s opinion will be agreed upon by many Tottenham fans, who will want their head coach to make the signings in the summer transfer window.

After all, it is Pochettino who will be working with the players every day, and he needs to be happy with the squad.

However, the position of a director of football has its merits, and indeed Tottenham have benefitted from it.

Over the years, the North London club have signed a number of top players, including Luka Modric and Gareth Bale.

While a manager at a football club can often look after his own interest and want to sign players for the immediate future, a director of football focuses on the club’s long-term interest.

Acting as an intermediary between the manager and the board, the director of football can help the former focus on coaching the players and getting results.

The problem with such an arrangement is that managers are often left with players who do not fit into their style: he essentially coaches a group of players assembled by someone else.

The key to a successful relationship between a manager and a director of football is good communication, and doing what is best for the club.

A compromise needs to be made between the two when making key decisions, especially when signing players.
