Don Hutchison tweets his hopes for Sunderland and Newcastle - are they realistic?

St James Park

Don Hutchison has stated on social networking site Twitter that he hopes to see both Sunderland and Newcastle United in the top eight of the Premier League.

The former Sunderland midfielder made the comments following the Black Cats’ appointment of Dick Advocaat as their head coach last week.

Realistic or unrealistic?

Sunderland and Newcastle both narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League at the end of the recently concluded 2014-15 season.

It is hugely unrealistic that next season either the Black Cats or the Magpies will end up in the top eight, let alone the top six.

Neither Sunderland nor Newcastle have a squad capable of challenging for a top-10 finish. Even if investments are made this summer, the teams will still fall short.

At this moment in time, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Southampton, Swansea City and Everton are better placed than Sunderland and Newcastle for a top-eight finish.

However, in the coming years things could change. After all, not so long ago Newcastle were playing in the Champions League.

If the Sunderland and Newcastle owners decide to invest in their respective teams and have a long-term vision, then in the coming years things could improve.
