Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has labelled former Liverpool superstar Luis Suarez as one of the best signings in the club’s entire history, the Daily Mail reports.
The Uruguay international traded the Reds for the Nou Camp last summer, despite initial complications resulting from his lengthy ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.
The money Barcelona splashed out on Suarez was the biggest fee in the club’s history, and questions were raised about his position in the starting XI alongside Neymar and Lionel Messi.
Yet, after a slow start, Suarez switched with his Argentine teammate Messi and as a number nine he began to replicate his previous Premier League form which saw him score 31 goals in 33 matches.
Since the turn of the New Year, the Catalans have been unstoppable on their way to a historic treble and Luis Enrique believes Suarez has in turn proven to be one of the club’s greatest ever acquisitions.
“When we thought about Luis Suarez and considered him we knew of his great quality and his tremendous scoring figures but of course we had doubts about whether he would adapt to a different team and a different way of play,” Enrique admitted to reporters.
“As it has turned out he has been one of the best players we have ever signed and it was a very good decision to put our trust in him. We paid a lot of money but he has shown he has tremendous hunger.”
Suarez netted 25 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions, though none of his strikes were as important as his match-winning goal in the 3-1 Champions League victory over Juventus on Saturday.
The 28-year-old has formed an unstoppable strike force alongside Messi and Neymar, the trio notching a record 122 goals in all competitions for the season.
