Video: Liverpool’s Serbian winger Lazar Markovic nets wonderful effort on international duty

Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic found the net during Serbia’s friendly 4-1 win over Azerbaijan.

Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic proved what he can do in an advanced role as he netted a wonderful strike from the corner of the box during Serbia’s 4-1 win over Azerbaijan.

The 21-year-old winger joined the Reds last summer, moving to Anfield from Portuguese champions Benfica following a superb campaign at the Estadio da Luz.

His arrival was met with plenty of promise and expectation, though this soon turned into frustration as the former Partizan wonderkid struggled to get to grips with the challenges on Merseyside.

A red card in the crucial Champions League encounter with Basel summed up his start with the Reds, but was Markovic’s failure to impose himself his own doing?

As per the video clip above, the attacking talent and close control is there for all to see but how many opportunities did Brendan Rodgers give him in such a role last season?

For large parts of the campaign, Markovic was restricted to substitute appearances but tasked with a rare start he was often played in a more defensive role to compensate for his attacking teammates.

An ensuing injury crisis in the full-back positions even saw him switched to right-wing back, a huge contrast to where he found himself position during his latest appearance for Serbia.

However, after showing his capabilities on Sunday, perhaps Brendan Rodgers will contemplate trying him out further forward when the Reds players return for pre-season training.
