Report: Newcastle United chasing Chelsea's injury-prone midfielder Marco van Ginkel

The Dutch international is highly rated, but prone to injury.

This week Steve McClaren looks set to be appointed as the new manager at Newcastle United, with the former Middlesbrough and FC Twente boss hoping to take the club back to former glories after a dismal 2014-15.

Newcastle only survived on the final day of the season thanks to a 2-0 win against West Ham.

Now plans are in place to stop a repeat performance, including in the player recruitment department.

The Chronicle is today reporting two names high on McClaren's wish-list. One of them is West Brom striker Saido Berahino, who has been tentatively linked previously. The other is Marco van Ginkel.

The Dutch international joined Chelsea in 2013 for a fee reported by the BBC to be in the region of £8 million.

The former Vitesse man is considered one of Holland's top talents, but since his move to Chelsea things have gone downhill. He suffered a serious knee injury last term and has battled fitness troubles again this term, during a loan spell at AC Milan.

Newcastle fans will therefore be wary. Van Ginkel is a great talent, but one Dutch star has already struggled to maintain fitness throughout 2014-15 in the form of Siem De Jong. Newcastle will not want a repeat.
