Obiang, a 23-year-old defensive midfielder, has been in impressive form in Serie A this season, starting 32 league matches for Sampdoria over the course of the campaign.
His displays saw the Hammers show a heavy interest towards the back end of the season, with previous reports by a Sky Sports Italia journalist suggesting that a €7.5 million deal to take him to Upton Park had been struck.
Such a deal, however, has so far failed to come to fruition, and fresh reports now suggest the East Londoners’ bid to sign him could become a little more complicated.
“President Ferrero will travel to London along with Vigorelli tomorrow to meet with West Ham to discuss a swap deal involving midfielder Obiang and Enner Valencia,” Sky Sports Italia state.
The Upton Park outfit are rather light in the attacking areas, therefore allowing the Ecuadorian international to leave in exchange for Obiang would be deemed a nonsensical move.
However, with the likelihood of loan star Alex Song making his move permanent slim to say the least, a new defensive midfielder is also a priority for West Ham and Obiang represents a fine option.
