Former European Golden Shoe and FIFA World Cup Golden Ball winner Diego Forlan is to be released by Cerezo Osaka this July
With the likes of Dimitar Berbatov being discussed as a potential summer target for several Premier League clubs, what of fellow former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan?
The 36-year-old is set to become a free agent next month after Cerezo Osaka announced – as reported by NBC Sports - that the forward's $5.8 million contract with the club would not be renewed.
Currently residing in J-League 2 following relegation from the top-flight last season, Forlan has managed 19 goals in 47 appearances.
That return included a hat-trick against Kyoto Sanga earlier this season, in a 3-0 win for his employers.
Question marks remain as to whether the ex-Red Devil, who enjoyed his best spells in Spain with Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, would be open to the idea of moving to the Premier League, or alternatively Championship, and whether he could still do the business at that level.
With retirement a distinct possibility, we may have seen the last of Forlan in professional football.
