Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey's summer promise could be bad news for Jack Wilshere

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey wants to return to central midfield.

Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey has told The Sun he plans on impressing in the middle with Wales before working hard in pre-season in order to win his place back his favoured position.

The Welsh international has spent the majority of the last six months in a wider role, boss Arsene Wenger opting for Spanish star Santi Cazorla in the middle alongside Francis Coquelin.

Ramsey’s biggest problem is that his teammate Cazorla has found arguably his career-best form this season, scoring seven goals and assisting a further 11 in 33 Premier League matches.

While Ramsey is seemingly happy to be a regular, the former Cardiff City man is itching for a return to central midfield and revealed his plans this summer in order to gain Wenger’s attention.

“I’ll be very happy playing back in the middle for Wales. Of course, that’s my favourite position and where I play my best football,” Ramsey admitted.

“I had a chat with (Wenger) a few times and he said it was temporary. He felt he needed me out wide for the back part of last season and I’ve had an effect on games.”

“A goal against Belgium may give him a nudge. But after this game I will have a good rest and work my socks off in pre-season to get back in the centre.”

“That’s what I’ll be looking to do and I’m confident in my ability that I can do that and win my place back there.”

Where do Aaron Ramsey's midfield intentions leave Jack Wilshere?

With Francis Coquelin’s place in the Arsenal first-team XI secure, that remaining midfield position is now arguably a three-way battle between Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere.

Squad competition is always going to help push players to improve, but too much in one specific role could have an adverse effect and leave a player dejected with his lack of playing time.

During Wilshere’s injury layoff, the England international’s absence was barely felt as the Gunners improved dramatically since the turn of the year.

Ramsey’s ambition could restrict Wilshere to a bit-part role next season and such a scenario would likely see the midfielder once again linked away from the club, as per a previous report in the Mirror.
