Tottenham Hotspur are said to be an attractive prospect for a young defender, but do they need him now?
According to a report from nieuwsblad.be young Anderlecht defender Chancel Mbemba is interested in a move to Tottenham Hotspur, although it is suggested that Spurs’ recent signing of fellow centre-back Kevin Wimmer means a deal is less likely.
Mbemba may only be 20 but he has already featured 76 times for Anderlecht’s first-team, scoring nine goals and providing two assists to date.
He previously came through the ranks at the Belgian side’s academy and he has also won six senior caps for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tottenham’s defensive performances this season meant some new additions in that area were always likely. But despite Mbemba’s alleged interest in a move to Spurs, it could be tough with Wimmer joining Jan Vertonghen, Federico Fazio and Eric Dier as potential starters already.
The report claims Mbemba has “a soft spot” for Tottenham, while comments from his agent suggest three clubs are currently vying for his signature, “from Spain, from England and from Germany.”
However, following Wimmer’s arrival Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is likely to be looking at strengthening other areas of the field, most notably central midfield, on the wing and up front.
