Vlaar’s contract at Villa Park expires this summer, and a report in the Telegraph claims that the Birmingham-based club face the real prospect of losing him on a free transfer.
Tim Sherwood has offered the 30-year-old Dutch international a new contract, to prevent him leaving on a free, but the report has stated that Vlaar is considering his future amid ‘serious interest’ from a selection of clubs across Europe.
He has no need to commit to signing a new deal whilst he considers his future, and the former Villa captain will wait to assess his options before deciding upon his next move.
Losing Vlaar would be a major blow to Sherwood, who looks set to rebuild his squad this summer in what is his first pre-season at Villa Park. It appears as if the club have already failed in their attempts to sign Tom Cleverley on a permanent deal following the expiration of his loan, with the same report suggesting that he is set to complete a free transfer to Everton.
Despite losing the captaincy to Fabian Delph, following Sherwood’s arrival at the club, the central defender is a vital component of the Villa team, and replacing his talent, influence and experience will be a tough challenge.
Villa still have time to convince Vlaar that extending his contract is the best decision for him, but right now it appears as if the Dutch veteran is planning on departing the club this summer.
