Much has been made of James Milner’s free transfer to Liverpool and the impact he could potentially have. His rumoured wages of around £140,000 a week have been met with shock in some quarters while others argue that the experience he’ll bring to a youthful Liverpool side will be worth every penny.
Phil Thompson is clearly a fan of Liverpool’s latest addition.
"I love his attitude, I love his ability, and I think it is a terrific signing for Liverpool," Thompson told Sky Sports in an interview.
He also offered his two cents on how Milner would be best utilised at Anfield:
"He’s got to play in central midfield as much as he can. I was watching Sky Sports News HQ after the news broke and I think I saw he had seven assists last season, whereas Steven Gerrard only had one assist from more games. He’d also created 52 chances – that’s exactly what Liverpool want."
Thompson sees Milner as a natural fit for Liverpool and thinks he’ll have no problem settling in to his new surroundings.
“He lives up in this area and is happy in this part of the country – he’s a Leeds lad – so I think everything was spot on for both parties.”
Many Liverpool fans echo Phil Thompson’s sentiments and feel that Milner could prove to be a real stabilising influence in what have recently been turbulent times at Anfield with the departures of Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard likely to be followed by Raheem Sterling this summer.
If Liverpool can follow Milner’s arrival with a few more astute signings, the future may begin to look a little brighter.
