Former Arsenal player Liam Brady told talkSPORT he feels Calum Chambers means his old side won’t move to sign another centre back this summer.
One of the positions Arsene Wenger could arguably add another body to his squad is in the middle of the back four, but Brady has suggested Chambers represents a player the Frenchman will look to use more and more next season.
Wenger also did well to secure a deal for Gabriel Paulista last winter, which gives the Gunners a quartet of good defenders including Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
“He can definitely play centre back. We bought him as a centre back. He’s taken a little bit of time to settle in, he had a few games where he made some mistakes but he’s good,” he said.
Chambers had a mixed first season as an Arsenal player and is someone who represents a lot of potential for the Gunners.
He’s got a massive challenge on his hands as he looks for more than the 17 Premier League starts he managed last season.
Mertesacker and Koscielny are the first choice defensive partnership for Wenger, but Chambers’ technique gives him the potential to be able to play in a variety of different defensive positions.
He can provide cover at centre back, right-back and in the holding midfield role, which explains Wenger may not move to add a player in any of these positions before the close of the next transfer window.
It will be interesting to see just how prominent he becomes under Wenger.
