Speaking to Sport Wereld in Belgium, Tottenham defender Vertonghen committed his future to Spurs, admitting that the rumours about his future are just rumours, and that there is no way he is leaving the club.
The Belgian international said: “I think I'll stay. That’s one of those typical rumors doing the rounds every summer. There's no way I'm leaving.”
These are certainly comments that will delight Spurs fans, with Vertonghen one of the real stars in the Lilywhites squad.
An incredibly technical footballer, the 28-year-old is often criticised for his lack of defensive efficiency and frequent mistakes, but he is by far the most consistent player in the line-up.
With the arrival of Kevin Wimmer from Koln this summer, it was expected that a potential sale of Vertonghen would be more likely. Wimmer is a left-footed centre-back as well, and it is hard to see how the pair would fit in the first-team together.
The Sport Wereld story references interest from Napoli in Vertonghen, whilst he has also been linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United by the Mirror.
However, a summer transfer is now looking increasingly unlikely, and that is great news for Spurs fans, with Vertonghen becoming something of a cult hero at White Hart Lane.
