Swiss international centre-back Fabian Schar has long been an interest for several Premier League teams. After his excellent performances against Liverpool in the Champions League earlier this season there is little wonder why.
He is also out of contract at FC Basel this summer, making him an even more desired commodity.
The two teams most heavily linked with the player were West Ham and Southampton. Southampton were linked with the player in April by The Mirror. He was seen as a perfect replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who is only on loan from Atletico Madrid.
West Ham were linked with a move for the player by London 24 in March.
Tottenham Hotspur were also linked with the player. It was reported by The Mirror that Spurs were looking to gazump West Ham to the signature of the highly rated defender, who has 12 caps for Switzerland and has scored five goals, a great record for a centre-back.
So where will this top free agent go in the Premier League this summer? Nowhere is the answer, as he has agreed a move to join Bundesliga side Hoffenheim instead.
The club confirmed on their official website that the deal was done earlier today, Schar signing a four-year deal at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena.
The move to Germany is obviously a softer one for the Swiss, a German speaker, than the move to England.
But Southampton, Tottenham and West Ham may live to regret not convincing this 23-year-old talent to come give the Premier League a try.
