Could Timothy Fosu-Mensah play a part in Manchester United's summer tour?

Manchester United's talented young Dutchman could hold his own with the first-team on their summer tour, but will he get that chance?

Considering all the big-name stars that arrived at Manchester United last summer, it would be no surprise if the club’s fans failed to notice that a Dutch teenager also joined Louis van Gaal’s side.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah signed for United from Ajax back in September 2014 with a big reputation in his homeland.

Predominantly a centre-back, Fosu-Mensah can also play as a right-back or as a defensive midfielder and he is already making waves for United’s under-18s that suggest a first-team chance is only a matter of time.

United supporters should not get ahead of themselves in that regard; after all, the player is only 17. But he has already shone regularly for United’s under-18 side and he was named on the bench for an under-21 clash with West Ham United in April.

A commanding figure with confidence on the ball, an eye for a pass and the physicality to one day thrive in the Premier League, Fosu-Mensah could have a big summer ahead of him.

While no one will expect him to break into United’s first-team next season – with a permanent step up into the under-21s far more likely – a place on the senior summer tour could still be within his grasp.

United will be without those players taking part in the Copa America, which means some of their youngsters are likely to be charged with taking their place. And while he is wet behind the ears, Fosu-Mensah has shown enough in his first year at the club to suggest van Gaal has taken notice.

In time United look like they have a future star on their hands, and their fans may just get a glimpse or two of that quality in the upcoming matches against the likes of Club America, San Jose Earthquakes, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

And even if this summer is too soon for him to be included in the senior pre-season tour, it will not be long before that changes…because he really is that good.
