Andros Townsend brings the curtain down on Paul Merson row

Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend says that there is no problem between him and former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson.

Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend has told The Daily Star that his so-called feud with former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson is over.

Earlier this season, the duo were involved in exchange of words on social networking site Twitter.

Back in late Match, Merson criticised England coach Roy Hodgson’s decision to include Townsend in his squad, telling Sky Sports: “If Townsend can get in then it opens it up for anybody.”

The 23-year-old Spurs winger hit back at his compatriot after scoring against Italy and posted the following message for him on Twitter:

Merson responded to that Tweet by telling Sky Sports that he does not feel that he has to defend himself as he was only giving his opinion.

However, a few days later after Tottenham’s goalless draw with Burnley in the Premier League - one of the worst games of the 2014-15 season - Merson hit back at Townsend with the following Tweet:

The row between Merson and Townsend was quite amusing to the neutrals, and the latter has now said that it is water under the bridge.

“In football there is a lot of banter," the 23-year-old told The Daily Star. ”He (Merson) made a comment then I made one, but I'm sure if I saw him tomorrow we'd shake hands and laugh about it.

"He was entitled to his opinion but I've just tried to channel that criticism into positive performances. I came on and scored the goal against Italy - so hopefully I'll get more criticism next time!”
