Liverpool are taking the initiative over Arsenal in the pursuit of Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to Sky Sports reports, as they up their offer for the former Dinamo Zagreb playmaker.
The two Premier League clubs have been pursuing the talented Croatia international for some time according to sources such as the Express, but at the time of writing it is only Liverpool who appear to be doing the leg work to bring the 21-year-old to England.
Sky are reporting Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport's story that the Reds have bid £15.2 million for the Serie A star, as they seek to bring in midfield talent to replace departed Anfield legend Steven Gerrard. That's an improvement on Liverpool's initial reported offer of £13 million according to the Express. Despite the Gunners alleged interest, there is as yet no word on a bid from North London.
Liverpool and Arsenal have reportedly been chasing another midfielder this week, with England international James Milner highly sought after as his Manchester City contract approaches its end.
The Reds are also said the be favourites for the 29-year-old, according to the London Evening Standard, with Brendan Rodgers set to offer Milner a bumper £150k a week, as well as making him a central figure in the side next season.
If Rodgers manages to beat Arsene Wenger to two midfielders with as much quality as Kovacic and Milner, he will have been very happy with his midfield transfer business this summer.
