Ian Wright baffled by lack of credit given to Manchester United's Wayne Rooney

The former Arsenal man also says it is unfair to compare the United skipper to both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Speaking on BreatheSport, Ian Wright says he is baffled as to why Wayne Rooney doesn’t get as much credit as other players.

The Manchester United and England captain has endured a mixed season, playing most of the campaign in an unfamiliar central midfield role under new manager Louis Van Gaal.

He is, however, still a star player for club and country, as well as being one of the best in the Premier League since breaking onto the scene aged 16. He has also won everything at United, and Wright says he deserves more praise than he is given.

“Why he doesn’t get the credit, I don’t understand, it just baffles me,” he said.

“He’s done everything domestically and European, apart from the World Cup and European Championships, he’s done it.”

When the forward first burst onto the scene, there were expectations he would be one of the best ever, with the usual comparisons drawn to Paul Gascoigne.

If there is one criticism of Rooney, it is that he has not done it on the international stage, often coming in for criticism for his performances in an England shirt.

That has led to many questioning whether he is truly a world-class player on the level of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, currently the world’s top two players by some distance. Wright, though, says it is unfair to compare him to the Real Madrid and Barcelona maestros.

“It’s unfair when people say he’s not on that level [of Messi and Ronaldo], so many people aren’t,” he added.

“Since he was 16 he’s been at a high level for the whole time of his career. He’s seen them all come, when Ronaldo had that great season before he left, he played second fiddle. Next season he scored thirty plus goals.”
