Houghton, a former West Ham player, has revealed that a lot of West Ham supporters he knows have been speaking about the possibility of Moyes in charge at Upton Park and at the Olympic Stadium from the end of next season.
“I think a lot of them would quite like David Moyes, I know a lot of West Ham fans and they’ve been chatting about it – Moyesy was one of the names going round quite a lot to be honest but whether he’ll be prepared to leave Spain I’m not so sure,” he said.
It was a bit of a curveball when Moyes announced that he was heading to Spain to manage Real Sociedad and it’s difficult to judge what sort of ambition he will have for the top level Spanish side.
If he wants a genuine crack at getting Sociedad into the European places of La Liga, any moves from West Ham to poach him could turn out to be nothing more than a waste of time.
The appeal of having Moyes in charge is very obvious. Although his spell at Manchester United didn’t even last a year, his record before that job at Old Trafford speaks for itself.
He worked wonders with Everton on very little money and got the Toffees into a position where they became a very difficult team for any Premier League club to get the better of.
Former West Ham player Slaven Bilic remains the betting favourite to get the job, but Houghton feels there is real support for the Scot.
