Former Sunderland midfielder cynical about Newcastle situation

Former Sunderland and West Ham midfielder Don Hutchison does not seem to believe that ex-Arsenal star Patrick Vieira was genuinely interested in the Newcastle job.

Former Sunderland midfielder Don Hutchison has suggested on social networking site Twitter that Patrick Vieira was never really in contention for the Newcastle United managerial job.

Vieira, a former Arsenal midfielder, was recently linked with the managerial role at St. James’ Park.

However, the Frenchman has now been ruled out, with BBC Sport reporting that the Manchester City Under-21 manager is “out of the running”.

It has been claimed that “both parties opted not to pursue a possible deal following differences over recruitment and transfer policy”.

Hutchison, a former Liverpool and West Ham United midfielder, does not buy the idea that Vieira was interested in the Newcastle job.

According to BBC Sport, former Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest manager Steve McClaren is now being “tipped to take over” at Newcastle.

The Englishman is without a managerial job at the moment, having been sacked by Championship outfit Derby County last month.

Newcastle narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League in the recently concluded 2014-15 season.

The Magpies finished 15th in the league table with 39 points from 38 matches, just four points above the relegation zone.
