Former West Ham United and Manchester City winger Trevor Sinclair has predicted on social networking site Twitter that Arsenal will “seriously” challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Sinclair made his comments following the Gunners’ 4-0 victory over Aston Villa in the final of the FA Cup at London’s Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening.
England international forward Theo Walcott put the North London outfit in the lead in the 40th minute, and Chilean star Alexis Sanchez doubled the advantage five minutes into the second half.
German defender Per Mertesacker made it 3-0 to Arsenal with a header just past the hour mark, and France international striker Olivier Giroud wrapped up the comprehensive win late on.
Over the course of the 90 minutes, Arsenal had 58% of the possession, took 16 shots of which nine were on target and earned eight corners.
In contrast, Tim Sherwood’s Villa had 42% of the possession, took just two shots of which neither was on target and did not earn a single corner.
Former England international winger Sinclair was following the match, and he was impressed with the performance of Arsenal.
Like Sinclair, many observers will back Arsenal to challenge the likes of Chelsea and City for the Premier League title next season.
The Gunners do have a squad which can compete with the best in England, but over the years they have fallen short.
The key to a successful challenge for the title for Arsenal will be to start the season strongly.
