Daryl Janmaat & Ayoze Perez were Newcastle's signings of 2014/15

Amid all the chaos, the Magpies duo stood out last season.

Words can't do justice to how poor Newcastle United's season was last term.

In the end, all it cost owner Mike Ashley financially was several million pounds in bonus money - but the club's Premier League status was maintained. Just.

Amid all the chaos, however, there were some players who did manage to stand out at St James' Park, perhaps simply because the rest were so bad...

Signed for £5 million, Daryl Janmaat is a strong contender for Newcastle's signing of 2014/15.

The club officially scrapped their end-of-season awards and rightly so but, were they held, the Dutchman could have gone home with a few.

Janmaat often stood up to be counted when others didn't and shone both going forward and defensively.

Interestingly, though, the 25-year-old wasn't Newcastle's only high-quality summer signing - which makes it all the more puzzling why their 2014/15 was such a horror show.

Indeed, Ayoze Perez also impressed for the Magpies, with his goals securing vital points for the Tyneside outfit and his bright displays visibly changing the atmosphere at St James' Park on numerous occasions.

Another good summer signing perhaps provided better value for money in Jack Colback - signed for free. But, at £1.6m, Perez seems a steal with hindsight.
