Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has written in The Sun that Aston Villa’s most important transfer business will be hanging onto Christian Benteke.
Belgium international striker Benteke has been on the books of the Premier League outfit since 2012, but he has been linked with a move away from Villa Park this summer.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are all interested in the 24-year-old, according to The Daily Star, and Shearer has underlined the importance of Villa keeping the striker.
“Aston Villa need a clear-out this summer,” the former Newcastle and England international striker wrote in The Sun.
“Tim Sherwood probably knew that. But the way they performed against Arsenal confirmed it.
“His most important dealing, though, will be trying to hang on to Christian Benteke. He has to do everything in his power to keep him at Villa — then build a team around him.”
It will be far from easy for Villa to convince Benteke to remain for the 2015-16 season, especially if he gets the chance to move to a top Premier League club.
One cannot blame Benteke if he wishes to leave Villa, either. The former Genk star is one of the better strikers in the Premier League, and he has outgrown the Villans.
The Belgium international struggled to make an impact for most of the recently concluded 2014-15 Premier League campaign, but he came to life when Tim Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert as the Villa manager.
The former Standard Liege man scored 13 goals and created 33 chances in 29 Premier League appearances this season.
Benteke had a pass accuracy of 67% and a shot accuracy of 45%, and won 187 headers, 17 dribbles and seven tackles.
