Could Tottenham Hotspur swap one defensive midfielder for another this summer?
The latest report claims Marseille will continue their attempts to bring Stambouli back to his homeland after a disappointing debut campaign in North London, but with Spurs allegedly rejecting an earlier loan bid, could Imbula’s availability see the deal go through.
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder is a regular starter for Marseille and according to a recent report from the Mirror he is high on Chelsea’s wanted list for a fee in the region of £25million. But with Le10 Sport reporting that the French side want to sell him to balance their books, and with Tottenham allegedly keen, could a player-plus-cash deal see him and Stambouli trade places?
That is certainly the suggestion in the French media, and there is little doubt Tottenham would be swapping a player who has failed to impress in England with one who is rated very highly indeed.
They would have to part with a considerable amount of cash as well, but Imbula would fit Tottenham’s model of signing talented young players with the potential to improve and the likelihood of increased resale value.
It may simply be the case of the French media taking the players’ situations and turning them into a handy story, but with Marseille seemingly keen on Stambouli, Tottenham may be wise to suggest Imbula is included in any deal and go from there.
