Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to social networking site Twitter in order to comment on Lewis Holtby’s contributions during Hamburg’s historic night in the Bundesliga play-off.
The attacking midfielder joined Spurs in the 2013 January transfer window for a relatively small fee after impressing at Schalke 04 at the top end of the Bundesliga.
Arriving as a German international, many Spurs supporters had high hopes for Holtby but he ultimately struggled to adapt, featuring in just 25 Premier League games before departing on loan last summer.
His return to the Bundesliga with Hamburg hasn’t been a particularly good one, though his final game of the campaign will live long in memory due to its relative importance.
Facing a first-ever drop from the German top-flight, Holtby’s side managed to come back from the jaws of defeat to record a 2-1 extra-time victory over Karlsruhe in the relegation-promotion play-off.
It was a fitting end for Holtby, though it may not have been his last appearance for the club as previous reports in German paper Bild state a £5 million permanent deal is already in place.
Watching on from the comfort of their own homes, a number of Spurs fans will have been willing the 24-year-old success and reacted on Twitter following Hamburg’s amazing turnaround.
Lewis Holtby what a man, would love him to come back. Seems likely that's not gonna happen though— Morgs (@morgshorne) June 1, 2015
Holtby. Top guy, got the looks, work rate, passion... But, not the quality we need in an already saturated position. pic.twitter.com/UU17VtUI5l— Declan Wiseman (@Wizward) June 1, 2015
AVB ruined Holtby, turned him into a workhorse. Such a shame cause he was brilliant at Schalke.— Jake. (@YedIin) June 1, 2015
WHY CANT HOLTBY JUST PLAY FOR TOTTENHAM— DECKY (@deckymch) June 1, 2015
I just want Holtby to come home, I'll hug him and tell him AVB and Tim never happened— Modern Spurs (@Modern_spurs) June 1, 2015
Prefer not to watch Hamburg play. The image I have in my head is Holtby frantically running in circles around a knackered, stationary VDV.— James Maw (@JamesMawFFT) June 1, 2015
