Report: Newcastle end interest in Patrick Vieira, Steve McClaren expected to be named manager before next week

Newcastle have faced another blow in their search to hire a new manager.

Patrick Vieira has ruled himself out of the Newcastle managers’ job, leaving Steve McClaren to become frontrunner, according to the Mail.

Vieira never held formal talks with the Tyneside club, and although they approached his representatives, the former Arsenal midfielder was never seriously considered for the role.

This has opened the door for Steve McClaren to return as favourite for the role, and he is expected to hold talks with the Magpies this week, ahead of an appointment before next week.

McClaren is a solid appointment, if not one that will excite many fans, being a coach who is an old hand and has a wealth of experience. He is sure to stabilise the club and prevent any chance of relegation, but it is hard to sense a progression under him, and there are newfound doubts about his man-management ability due to his final months in charge of Derby.

After a few weeks of confusion and instability at the club, as a host of coaches ruled themselves out of the job, it finally appears as if the Tyneside club are set to appoint a manager in the coming days, and start preparing for next season.
