Report: Leeds United interested in 18-goal 9-assist striker Emanuele Calaio

Leeds United have been credited with interest in Italian striker Emanuel Calaio.

Motherwell's Lee Erwin may be on the brink of a move Leeds United, report the Daily Record, but are the club eyeing another striker too?

Reports in Italy have linked Leeds with forward Emanuele Calaio, who could be a short-term option for the club.

On the face of this quick description, fans may not be too enthused... Calaio is 33-years-old and plays for Serie B side Catania.

But this is no Edgar Cani.

Calaio has pedigree and an eye for goal. This season he scored 18 in 35 games, and provided nine assists, the highest in the side on both counts.

The striker played more than 80 times for Napoli earlier in his career, most recently as 2012/13, played four seasons in Serie A with Siena, and is a former Italian under-21 international.

CataniaUnaFede report Calaio is wanted by top flight side Atalanta, as well as Leeds United, and expect the striker to leave the club this summer with just one year remaining on his contract.

Leeds had mixed success with buys or loans from Italy last season, with Calaio's teammate Cani a resounding flop, playing only 49 minutes for the Whites.

Calaio's age suggests he will not be a long-term option for Leeds, but if they are after an experienced compliment for their current strikers, and young prospects like Erwin, the attacker could become of one the club's summer signings.

Here he is scoring a free-kick past Pepe Reina while on loan at Genoa in 2013/14:
