The English midfielder has expressed his admiration for the Germany international.
The Gunners retained the FA Cup with a commanding 4-0 win over Aston Villa at the weekend, which rounded off a season that promised much but ended with the North London club’s title bid falling by the wayside.
Wilshere has had a troubled time of it personally, with injuries taking their toll and as such an automatic place in the Emirates Stadium starting XI no longer assured.
With questionable actions following Arsenal’s FA Cup triumph and a smoking scandal also sullying Wilshere’s reputation, it appears that the homegrown star needs a role model to look up to.
When discussing his team-mates, the England international has stated that Mesut Ozil is a player that he admires and tries to be like on the pitch.
“We’ve got players who can hurt teams with Alexis and Ozil, world-class players we’ve added in the last two seasons,” Wilshere told the club’s official website.
“Ozil has had a great season, he’s settled, and Alexis having a first season like he’s had is unheard of, so we are looking forward to next season.
“Mesut’s a player I look up to. When he’s on the pitch, surrounded by players and under pressure, he’s always got his head up and looking around. There’s more to come from Mesut and I’m sure he’ll improve next season.”
Wilshere will hope to remain injury free over the summer and hit the ground running ahead of next term with a full pre-season.
The presence of Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin in the heart of the Arsenal midfield threatens the Englishman’s chances to play.
