Newcastle United have been beaten by Bayern Munich in the race to sign Aymen Abdennour from Monaco, according to a report in L'Equipe quoted by the Daily Mirror.
Newcastle had identified Abdennour as a potential transfer target, but they have struggled to compete with Bayern for his signature.
The 25-year-old is now expected to complete a move to Pep Guardiola's side in the near future, which will be a blow for Newcastle.
The Magpies apparently felt that Abdennour was the perfect fit for English football, with the Algerian international possessing great amounts of strength, but also being comfortable with the ball at his feet.
He would have been a first-team regular at St. James' Park, but it appears that he has opted to battle it out for a place in Bayern's team.
Newcastle will, therefore, have to look elsewhere as they realise the importance of making defensive additions this summer.
The North East oufit have been short of options at centre-back this season and they know that it is an area they need to improve over the coming months.
