Atletico Madrid-owned defender Toby Alderweireld has reportedly become a transfer target for Chelsea, which could be a disappointment for Southampton.

Toby Alderweireld is a transfer target for Chelsea this summer, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.

Alderweireld has been on loan with Southampton this season and his performances have apparently impressed Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese boss reportedly believes that Alderweireld would enhance his defensive options considerably, with his versatility a bonus.

Alderweireld is capable of playing anywhere across the back line, as well as in defensive midfield, and he could be brought in as Filipe Luis' replacement.

Luis is said to be of interest to Atletico Madrid, with the La Liga side reportedly confident they will be able to tempt him back to the club, and it is thought that Alderweireld could be used as part of that deal.

If Aldeweireld does move to Stamford Bridge it will be a blow for Southampton, as the South Coast club have made him singing him a priority.

The Belgian has been one of the stars of their season and Ronald Koeman has seemingly been making plans to sign him for some time.
