The report states that the Gunners are lining up a bargain £5 million bid for the Portugal international after the 23-year-old rejected a new contract with Sporting – paving the way for his exit from the club after 16 years of service.
Last month, Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo reported that Barcelona were very keen on signing the talent in order to replace departing full-back Daniel Alves, who is expected to leave the club at the end of his contract, as reported by Sky Sports.
The youngster has been ever present for Sporting this season and has won rave reviews despite being unable to help them improve on a disappointing third-place finish.
If Arsenal do hijack the move for the Portuguese international, then it’s likely to create more tension between the clubs as the Gunners maintain their reputation as the Spanish side’s rivals in the transfer market.
The North London side have signed the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral from the Catalan club in the past, while Barcelona have poached Thierry Henry and in this window have been linked with Aaron Ramsey, as reported by the Evening Standard.
Although the summer break has only just started, the race to sign the German-born full-back seems to be intense and it will be an interesting outcome to see who eventually lands him.
