David de Gea coy on his Manchester United future

One of Manchester United's star players has refused to rule out an Old Trafford exit.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been speaking about the speculation surrounding his future in comments published by the London Evening Standard.

The Spanish international took to Instagram at the weekend to send a message that may worry United fans, as the 24-year-old refused to rule out a return to his homeland.

“We’ll see what happens with my future…I’m on vacation now and very happy with this recognition,” De Gea wrote shortly after being recognised as an adopted son of the Spanish region of Toledo.

The United stopper has just a year left on his current contract and continues to be heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.

If he did move on, it would come as a hammer blow to United and their supporters as they have seen De Gea blossom into one of the best ‘keepers in the world. But until he puts pen to paper on a new deal the speculation will continue.

United have seen what can happen when players start talking about waiting to see what their future brings, with Cristiano Ronaldo saying something similar before he ultimately completed his move to the Bernabeu.

If De Gea does move on, United will no doubt replace him swiftly and effectively, but he is one of their key players and they will want to do everything in their power to keep him for the long term.

He has blossomed at Old Trafford, but much like Ronaldo before him, will it be Real that gets him at his peak?
