HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City are chasing Dean Whitehead, who is set to leave Middlesbrough.
Whitehead's contract at Middlesbrough expires later this month and he has been informed that he will not be getting a new deal at the Riverside Stadium.
The 33-year-old joined Middlesbrough from Stoke in 2013 and made over 60 appearances for the club.
The former Sunderland man has struggled to hold down a regular place in Aitor Karanka's side this season, being forced to play at full-back instead of his preferred position of central midfield due to the form of Grant Leadbitter and Adam Clayton.
The news of Whitehead's availability on a free transfer has alerted a number of clubs, with Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City both expressing an interest in the experienced midfielder.
Huddersfield boss Chris Powell is keen to add some experience to his squad for next season, while Gary Rowett is looking to build on an impressive debut campaign at St Andrew’s last term.
