Who could Manchester United play in the Champions League qualifying round? All you need to know

Manchester United will not have it easy in their bid to reach the group stages of next season's Champions League.

Manchester United’s fourth-place finish in this season’s Premier League means that while they have qualified for the Champions League, they will have to navigate a tricky two-legged qualifying match.

That would have been avoided if Louis van Gaal’s side had finished ahead of Arsenal but that was not to be, and now the Dutchman knows the full list of sides United could face in the crunch clashes in August.

The good thing for United is that they will be seeded for the draw, meaning they will avoid Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen, Ajax and Shakhtar Donetsk. But that does not mean they are guaranteed an easy ride.

In fact they could face arguably a tougher opponent than some of those they are avoiding, with Sporting Lisbon, Monaco, Lazio and CSKA Moscow all a possibility.

There could be a slightly easier tie though, with United also potentially coming up against Young Boys, Sparta Prague, Rapid Vienna, Panathinaikos, Brugge or Fenerbahce.

United will know by August 26 if they are in the Champions League proper or the Europa League next season, with the qualifying ties completed by then.
