Manchester United are looking to strengthen their squad in all areas over the summer, with a number of high profile targets rumoured to be interesting Louis van Gaal.
With Memphis Depay already on his way to Old Trafford, it appears the Red Devils want to get their business done early this summer, having waited to sign four players within days of the transfer deadline last year.
There would be no deal more high profile than if United were to tempt a Manchester City player to move across the divide.
James Milner is out of contract this summer should City choose not to offer him a new deal, with the England midfielder free to join whichever club he desires.
According to the Mirror, United are one of several interested parties and are hoping to beat rivals Arsenal and Liverpool to a deal for Milner.
The 29-year-old featured in 32 of City’s 38 league games in 2014-15 but he was frustrated with his bit-part role in midfield. Manuel Pellegrini chose to use Milner as a utility man, rather than in his preferred central midfield role regularly.
Whoever Milner chooses to sign for, they will have to guarantee him a place in central midfield regularly. Although Liverpool seems a likely destination due to the fact they are in desperate need of reinforcements in a central area due to the departure of Steven Gerrard, United are reportedly hoping to rub both their rivals' faces in it by stealing him at the last second.
With Liverpool failing to qualify for the Champions League, the departure of Gerrard and Raheem Sterling’s contract saga rumbling on, the crisis at Anfield may leave Milner with second thoughts on whether to sign for Brendan Rodgers’ men.
With Van Gaal said to be a huge admirer of Milner’s honesty and work rate, he would appear to be a good squad option for United this summer.
