Former Queens Park Rangers and Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton is reportedly being targeted by Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion.

Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino is prepared to offer Joey Barton a £1 million-a-year contract, according to The Sun.

Former Newcastle United midfielder Barton is currently a free agent after being released by Queens Park Rangers.

According to The Sun, the Englishman wants to remain in the Premier League and has attracted interest from West Bromwich Albion.

However, the British tabloid claims that Leeds “want to talk to Barton this week and put their case”.

Paying £1m per year to a 32-year-old is not ideal for any Championship club, but in Barton the West Yorkshire outfit will get a midfielder who knows the second tier of English football inside out.

The former Manchester City man is a tough, hard-tackling and no-nonsense midfielder who will be a good fit for any Championship team.

With Leeds fostering lofty ambition of returning to the Premier League, Barton would be a good signing, although there will be question marks on his temperament.
