With the FA Cup safely back in Arsenal’s trophy cabinet after their emphatic victory against Aston Villa this weekend, the English domestic campaign is over for another year. So what better time to take a look at how one of the Gunners’ key players performed in comparison with a former fan favourite.
Taking a closer look at the two players’ league performances this season, it is interesting to compare their contributions in key areas.
Arsenal’s record-signing just trumps the Chelsea star when it comes to passing accuracy, but there is only three per cent in it, while Ozil has also scored more league goals than his London rival.
Fabregas however is streets ahead in terms of assists – with 18 compared with Ozil’s five – and that is the one area where the Chelsea midfielder has stood head-and-shoulders above his midfield counterparts in his first year back in England.
Unsurprisingly, that means Fabregas averages far more forward passes per appearance than the Arsenal man, although he also loses possession more per game than the German international.
Despite Fabregas’s eye for an assist, Ozil actually plays more key passes per appearance which suggests that Arsenal’s forwards have to improve their shooting accuracy to in turn increase the German’s assist tally.
Overall then these are two players with talent aplenty, but with the amount of goals he has set up this season and the fact he held aloft the Premier League trophy, Fabregas would be forgiven for smiling the widest…at least for now.
