Report: Aston Villa send scouts to watch Alexandru Chipciu, could cost €10m

Romania

Aston Villa are reportedly tracking Steaua Bucharest playmaker Alexandru Chipciu.

According to Romanian newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor, Aston Villa will send scouts to watch Steaua Bucharest playmaker Alexandru Chipciu on Sunday.

Villa take on Arsenal in the FA Cup final later today, and having achieved Premier League safety, manager Tim Sherwood will have one eye on the summer transfer window.

With that in mind, Villa are reportedly sending scouts to Romania on Sunday to watch Steaua Bucharest star Chipciu as he takes on CFR Cluj in the Romanian Cup final.

Chipciu, 26, has 17 caps for Romania and has scored three goals for his country, establishing himself as one of the nation's key players.

A skilful player who can play out wide or behind a striker, Chipciu could follow former Steaua team-mates Vlad Chiriches and Florin Gardos to the Premier League, with those two having joined Tottenham and Southampton respectively in recent years.

However, Steaua are unsurprisingly keen to keep their star player at the club, and Gazeta suggest that the price tag on Chipciu's head could be as much as €10m - around £7m.

Manager Sherwood may be uneasy about spending that kind of money on a player with no Premier League experience, but much will depend on what Villa's scouts see in Chipciu this weekend - possibly after Villa raise the FA Cup trophy this evening.
