Chris Sutton says Celtic must sign a player to challenge or replace Emilio Izaguirre

The former Celtic star has made it clear what he thinks of this Bhoys player's defensive ability.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has been writing in the Daily Record about the Bhoys’ need to sign a new left-back this summer.

Celtic currently rely on Emilio Izaguirre in that area, with the Honduras international featuring 58 times this season.

But Sutton has highlighted the 29-year-old’s play as an area of weakness in Europe. And with Celtic having a tough round of Champions League qualifying matches on the horizon, Sutton has suggested Deila signs a new left-back either permanently or on loan to add competition and strength in that area of the field.

“Emilio Izaguirre has been vulnerable in Europe for a long time and Ronny needs to find an alternative to replace or at least threaten his place,” Sutton wrote.

“He’s got qualities going forward but just doesn’t seem to want to defend.”

With Deila knowing how important is to reach the group stages of next season’s Champions League, it would be no surprise if he moved for a player in that very area if at all possible.

While some areas of his side are extremely strong, others are one injury away from causing alarm and the Celtic boss will know that.

He has done brilliantly in his debut campaign at Celtic Park but that was only the start and it will be interesting to see who he brings in as he bids to do even better in his second season in charge.
