Report: Sunderland could move for former Derby County boss Steve McClaren

Steve McClaren

Former Derby County manager Steve McClaren is reportedly being targeted by Premier League duo Sunderland and Newcastle United.

Sunderland could make a move for former Derby County manager Steve McClaren, according to The Derby Telegraph.

McClaren is currently without a managerial job after being sacked as the County boss earlier this week.

Premier League outfit Sunderland are looking for a manager for next season following Dick Advocaat’s departure.

Good move?

McClaren is a very good manager and is also on the radar of Premier League club Newcastle United, according to The Guardian.

The Englishman was in charge of Derby for the past two years, and despite his dismissal, he can hold his head high.

In the 2013-14 season, the Rams reached the Championship playoff final, while in 2014-15 they narrowly missed out on a place in the top six.

Former Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough boss McClaren has Premier League experience, and knows what it takes for teams to stay up in the English top flight.

Sunderland, who narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League in the recently concluded 2014-15 campaign, will be fighting for survival once again next season.

McClaren would be a good managerial appointment for the Black Cats, whose main objective will be to retain their Premier League status.
