The 32-year-old's availability has alerted a number of Leeds fans on Twitter and the man who was linked with an Elland Road move earlier this summer is 12/1 with bookmakers to join the Yorkshire side ahead of next season.
Not only have supporters been talking on social media, however, they have also been discussing the ex-QPR man's suitability for the Whites on the pages of HITC Sport. Indeed, when it was suggested Barton could fill the void left by the recently released midfielder Rodolph Austin, opinion was split straight down the middle.
The 32-year-old was described, on the one hand, as a 'massive coup' and, on the other, an 'ageing liability.'
Leeds fans have raised a number of considerations: Barton's attitude, age, wages, form, experience, disciplinary record and the actual chances of him joining United.
What are your thoughts on the controversial former QPR midfielder? Is he exactly what Leeds need or just the type of player they should avoid this summer? Here's a selection of what's been said so far:

FRED wrote: 'Barton would be the perfect ball-winning, driving force in midfield, that Leeds desperately need, if he could behave himself, but he was on £100,000 plus, per week at QPR and surely Leeds can not afford to be paying him anything more than £20,000 per week. I doubt if Barton would get out of bed for anything less than £50,000 per week and there would always be a problem of him getting wound-up and sent off in the physical Championship games.
'Barton's wages would also cause jealousy amongst the other Leeds players and cause even more splits in the Leeds dressing room.'

Spellz wrote: 'I wouldn't mind Barton tbh, I wouldn't of compared him to Rudy tbf Barton is much more Technical than Rudy and has actually got a final ball and finish, however Rudy has some blistering pace and is a total warhorse yeah Bartons aggressive but Rudy stays way more in control of it.'
