Yorke: There was always going to be speculation over Christian Benteke

Former Aston Villa forward Dwight Yorke has suggested speculation over the future of Christian Benteke was inevitable.

Former Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke told talkSPORT that he felt there was always going to be speculation over the future of forward Christian Benteke.

The Belgian attacker played a key role towards the end of the last Premier League season, producing some big performances which helped his team get out of trouble in the Premier League.

Tim Sherwood may well have to brace himself for a summer where there are going to be several big sides tempted to make moves for Benteke and the Villa boss needs to work hard to protect one of the club’s key players.

“I think that speculation was always going to happen. You would have liked it to have come after the cup final but I think Benteke has done well – He seems to have got his form back at the right time – It’s an opportunity for all players to put themselves in the shop window for different reasons,” he said.

Benteke certainly fits the bill in terms of what a top club would be looking for; he’s tall, he’s strong, he’s got good control and he’s got a good burst of pace over the first five to ten yards.

When he’s on song, he’s effectively the complete striker that any team needs in order to be successful.

Clubs could start throwing some very big bids in the direction of Aston Villa, with the Daily Telegraph reporting earlier this month that Liverpool could be prepared to pay around £30 million to try and get their man.

Sherwood does not seem to have the sort of character where he will toy with speculation. He’s a sensible and forward thinking coach and fans can trust him to make the right decision.
