It is well publicised that the WWE passed up the opportunity to sign AJ Styles when he left TNA last year after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract. However, according to Inquisitr, WWE officials have changed their stance on him.
Since leaving TNA, Styles has rocked the independent circuits and has found major success in Japan as he currently holds the IWGP World Heavyweight Title.
It is believed Styles considers IGWP his home now and is under contract there, where he is also a member of the renowned Bullet Club faction along with The Young Bucks, Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows and others.
Unless his attitude has changed, WWE may be left disappointed as back in December during a podcast, quoted by Wrestle Zone, Styles said "Why would I want to go to WWE? I mean honestly … They’re struggling right now with the Network … I’m in the hottest wrestling company in the world—New Japan—and I’m with the hottest wrestling group. We can say it over and over again. It’s absolutely true.”
However, just as recently as March, Styles was quoted as saying “You don’t get into wrestling just to have matches, you get into wrestling to win the competition. Once I set my eyes on something, it’s hard to get my eyes on something, it’s hard to get them off of it. When I have a belt in sight, I want it. It’s just the way it is, anytime there’s an opportunity to wrestle for a belt, I go after it.”
With TNA mainstay Samoa Joe making his unlikely WWE debut last week, anything is possible and it is not beyond the realm of possibility to see AJ Styles follow Joe's lead. In addition, it seems that Joe will be able to also work the independent circuit while with WWE and such an agreement would suit Styles too.
It is said that WWE's interest is sparked by the desire to have three strong brands touring in 2016 so they are on the look out for as much quality talent as possible to make that happen.
