Tottenham fans respond to Alan Sugar's comments about the Europa League

Europa League Final

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been debating the competition - as well as their side's season as a whole.

It's the Europa League final on Wednesday night - an occasion not too important or familiar to Tottenham fans.

That's despite the north London side constantly taking part in the tournament and, of late, seeming to prioritise it.

It's been a subject that's created plenty of debate in recent years, of course, and will continue to do so now that Spurs have finished fifth in the Premier League once again.

One man who isn't keen is former Tottenham chairman Alan Sugar, someone who divides opinion among the White Hart Lane faithful himself...

And, whether you like him or loathe him, Sugar's comments have created plenty of further debate, with Spurs fans discussing the Europa League on HITC Sport's pages, as well as evaluating the north London side's season gone.

We asked supporters whether this was a good campaign for Tottenham or not - with plenty of disappointment perhaps counterbalanced by a Capital One Cup final and sneaking into fifth on the last day of the season.

With a wide range of views on offer, here's what Spurs fans have been saying in response to both Sugar and the close of the Premier League campaign:

George wrote: 'Personally no! And spurs fans should not the media con them into thinking less!!

'There were times where it should have gone a lot better, like the games from which we let ourselves down, even then we could of made champions league cos of other teams fckng up! And how many times during a month? Also certain team selection and silly things like naming Kane captain, , quite a number of games which were consistently bad performances!

'All these which as well the amount of goals we've let in And the amount of goals Harry scored does make you make wonder how good we should of been!!

'We must remember we are the famous TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR and only , only the best, and for me this was not the best!!'

Mr. Greaves wrote: '5th and a cup final performance flatters what we saw for a large part of the season, which was one of opportunity where we could have taken advantage and got 4th.

'There were too many unforced, bizarre and naive managerial decisions bolstered / papered over by the emergence of a 30 goal striker. Let's see what happens next year, because I have a strong belief that Pochettino is a lucky manager and something may well go his way again despite the mistakes he will invariably make.'

UK4football wrote: 'Spurs had three players scoring 10 or more goals in the PL - they were important goals too. I'm curious as to Lord Sugars' opinion on CL football, would that distract the players or will the PL distract them from the CL competition?

'I believe if Spurs want to compete in the CL, they will need the depth and consistency to handle the extra games. You can't magically acquire this with the flick of a switch. I'm glad they got 5th - not top 4 but above Spurs financial rank (6th I think) and it's good to see the youngsters coming through. One or two experienced players of a high calibre would help enormously for next season if Spurs can entice the right ones.

'Yedlin, Delli, Pritchard etc could be blooded in the Euro competition and eased into the main team instead of being thrown into the deep end.'

Robert wrote: 'At the end of the day we got the points to finish fifth, and at the start of the season most people were tipping us for seventh or sixth if we were lucky. It's Poch's first season and I think he has done OK with the squad he had. There is far too much mediocrity in the squad, so let's have a good clear out this summer and see who the new scouting network can come up with to replace them. I'm a realist, and until we get the new stadium we are unlikely to be strong enough to finish in the top four; therefore fifth is a very good result in my opinion even if we did only scrape it.

Gazspurs wrote: 'Personally I like being in Europe it attracts players.. just need to use it for that and not play our prem 11 in the competition it's that simple.

'Give the likes of our fringe guys a competion to play for..

'The likes of Kane Eriksen and Hugo shouldn't even go to the airport to wave them off.'

Gary F wrote: 'So which team in the top 4 were we better than over the course of a season? Maybe Man Utd but thats pushing it. With the unbalanced and underperforming squad we've got, 5th is about right. And Europa isnt a problem if we have the right approach. Its Thursday/ Sunday instead of Wednesday/Saturday so lets play the A Team fringe players and a few youngsters for experience.'

Spurs est1882: 'We were going to Europa regardless. 5th is straight to group, 6th is a spot too due to Chelsea in fa cup and if Arsenal beat villa then 7 th is a Europa too. At least this way we don't need to qualify.'

Colspur wrote: 'I think, if he played a formation that suited the quality of our current squad, fourth place would have been possible

'In general this was a poor standard premiership. If Pochettino had addressed our defensive problems by at least changing formation in certain games or during games we could be in the champions league.'
