Rennes boss admits desire to sign West Ham United target Yoann Gourcuff

The Frenchman started his career in Brittany.

Last week saw West Ham United linked with a move for Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff, who was once dubbed the next Zinedine Zidane.

It was reported by that West Ham were interested in the player - who is out of contract in the summer.

Gourcuff is a former Bordeaux and AC Milan star who has often found his name linked to a move to the Premier League. His quality is undoubted, although his fitness has let him down in recent times.

He has only played 19 times this season and it would certainly be an interesting move.

However, they have serious competition from a Ligue 1 outfit.

Stade Rennais are also keen on the player, as confirmed by their boss Philippe Montanier to 20 Minutes earlier today:

"I really like the player, and the few times I met the man, he always made me very good impression.

"He certainly has other proposals, but this is a player who could bring us. Of course, there is much talk of his injuries, but the Stade Rennais is a club that could allow him to recharge. It is consistent with his values, his region, his roots."

Gourcuff came through the youth ranks at Rennes, playing 80 games for the club before moving to AC Milan in 2006.

A return to his former club would certainly appeal to the mercurial talent, who has 31 caps for the French national team.

West Ham's interest may very well be in vein.
